IRS Seeks to Enlist Casino Workers to Report Suspected Financial Crimes

Internal Revenue Service agents and Nevada casino workers are somewhat unlikely allies in tracking suspected financial crimes. For years, the two groups were at odds over the taxability of tip income and casino workers endured mass IRS audits aimed at detecting underreported tips.

In recent months, however, the IRS has reached out more and more to casino workers, seeking to enlist them to a greater degree in alerting the agency to suspected criminal activity. By federal law, casinos are required to notify the IRS of customers who bet or deposit $10,000 or more or are involved in suspicious transactions of $5,000 or more. Suspicious transactions include such things as making an exchange of cash for checks but not gambling with that money.
